A helpful guide to filing your returns this tax season.

Navigating the complexities of a tax return can be a daunting task. From scrupulous categorizing to gathering and submitting documents for review, the process requires major attention to detail.

Now, when you’re a business owner who’s totally focused on delivering an awesome service, tax season is the last thing you want to spend time thinking about. The good news?

Tax preparation is one of our awesome services we’re totally focused on.

We live and breathe this stuff. That’s why we’ve laid out our simple process below, walking you through tax season so you’ll know exactly what’s coming. (Because, let’s be honest, “not knowing” is where a lot of the trepidation stems from).

Our simplified tax preparation guide

  1. You’ll receive our toolkit in January
In mid-January, expect to receive a checklist, questionnaire, and organizer detailing the documents we have from the previous year.

  2. You need to complete the checklist and questionnaire
Take time to diligently fill out the checklist and questionnaire, noting any significant changes that have occurred since the last tax season. We’ve gone into more detail on why this is important in the FAQs below!

  3. You need to submit your information by February 29th 2024
Return the completed checklist, forms, and any additional documents to us by February 29, 2024. This will ensure a smooth and timely processing of your returns.

  4. Communication and clarification
Following Step 3, we’ll reach out promptly if any documents are missing or if we require clarification on some specific details.

  5. Review and e-sign
Once your returns are completed, you’ll receive an email notification to review and e-sign the documents securely within the Canopy portal.

  6. Engagement Letter and payment
Shortly following that, you’ll receive an email from our payment processor, Anchor, to sign your engagement letter and provide payment information.

  7. E-filing and confirmation
Upon confirmation of payment, we’ll file your returns through our online tax software. You’ll be notified once the returns have been accepted.

  8. Final Steps
With your returns filed, you’ll need to ensure all taxes are paid by the due date (typically April 18th).

Some common FAQs that come up during tax season

  • Why do I have to fill out the questionnaire?
The questionnaire plays a crucial role because various factors can significantly impact your tax situation. Life events such as marriage, homeownership, or changes in income must be considered for an accurate tax return. If you have specific questions, feel free to contact us when submitting your tax information.

  • What if I need an extension?

You’ll need to notify us before February 28th if you need an extension. Remember, an extension of time to file doesn’t extend the time to pay your taxes. It’s important we calculate your projected taxes owed and submit the right paperwork. If you need some guidance on what to do if you can’t pay, get in touch. There’s always something we can do to help.

  • How do I access my returns?

You can review your signed copy and source documents through your Canopy client portal. If you need a paper copy, let us know when you submit your information and we’ll happily send it to you!

  • What do I do if I have a query about my return?

For any questions, reach out to Curtis via email, and he’ll guide you to the right place, answer or solution.

  • How do I check my refund status?

Track your federal refund status here: IRS Refund Status. For state refunds, check with your individual state's website. Georgia citizens can go here. Please note, in both cases, you’ll need your social security number, filing amount and the exact amount of your refund.

  • How do I pay my taxes?

There are two primary methods for making tax payments: electronic payments or paper vouchers. If you want to pay the taxes electronically, you’ll need to create an account with the IRS and State website. We can also provide paper vouchers with your information at the time of return delivery, just indicate on your paperwork which method you prefer!
